How I Went from a Beginner to a Skilled Content Writer – My Personal Journey
A Passion That Turned into a Career

I never planned to become a content writer. In fact, if you had told me years ago that I’d be writing blogs, optimizing for SEO, and building an audience, I might have laughed it off. But life has a way of surprising us.
Today, I want to share my journey, how I started, the struggles I faced, and the lessons I learned along the way.
If you're just starting or feel stuck in your writing career, I hope my story inspires you to keep going.
The Beginning: Writing for Myself
Like many introverts, I found comfort in writing. As a child, I loved keeping a diary, pouring my thoughts onto paper. It wasn’t about an audience; it was about self-expression.
I never thought of writing as a career option. But one day, I stumbled upon blogging. The idea that people could share their thoughts with the world fascinated me. That’s when I decided to give it a try.
My First Blog – And the Mistakes I Made
When I wrote my first blog, I had no clue about SEO, readability, or audience engagement. I simply wrote what I felt. It was raw and unstructured, but it was my start.
Like most beginners, I made plenty of mistakes:
Writing long, complex sentences
Ignoring keyword research
Not structuring my content properly
Expecting immediate success
But instead of giving up, I kept learning.
Learning SEO – The Game-Changer
At first, SEO sounded like a technical nightmare. But once I understood its basics, keywords, headings, meta descriptions, and readability. I realized it wasn’t as complicated as I thought.
I started applying SEO strategies, and slowly, my blogs gained traction.
I learned:
How to use long-tail keywords naturally
The importance of LSI keywords for context
Why engaging hooks matter
How to structure a blog for better readability
Expanding My Skills: Writing Beyond Blogs
As I improved, I explored different types of content:
SEO blogs
Website content
Social media captions
Email newsletters
This helped me become a more versatile writer.
Challenges: The Hard Truth About Content Writing
While writing is my passion, it hasn’t been an easy journey. The biggest struggles I faced were:
1. Finding paying clients – Especially in a market where competition is high.
2. Staying consistent – Writing regularly without burning out.
3. Earning hurdles – One of the biggest challenges in Pakistan is that platforms like Medium and Substack don’t support local payment methods, making direct earnings impossible. This was frustrating at first, but I didn’t let it stop me. Instead of giving up, I explored other ways to earn.
I started freelancing on Fiverr and Upwork and also leveraged LinkedIn to find direct clients. This shift helped me build a sustainable income as a writer, even when traditional earning wasn’t an option.
Where I Am Now – And What’s Next
Today, I write for multiple platforms, including Medium, Substack, and LinkedIn, optimizing content for SEO while staying true to my voice. I’ve also expanded into lead generation and content strategy.
But I know this is just the beginning. Writing is a lifelong journey, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
